Does coaching make sense for me?
This blog article was prompted by a question from a good friend. He recently told me about his current challenges and asked for my advice. My answer: Would you like my feedback as a friend or as a coach? Where is the difference?
Although the coaching market is currently booming, there is unfortunately still no fixed definition of the profession of coach. This means that there are many different types of coaching and many different methods. Nevertheless, in my opinion, there is a basic understanding of coaching according to which a coach should work. The following points relate to my way of working and my definition of a good coach.
The solution lies in the client.
A coach is not a consultant or trainer. A coach does not give personal advice or plans. A coach can act as a neutral provider of feedback, but in particular helps the client to find their own solutions.
The coach as a mirror
A coach mirrors the client’s beliefs, which stimulates the client’s self-reflection and uncovers hidden belief patterns. We are often blind to our self-sabotaging behavior and do not see the possibilities outside of our “tunnel vision”. Coaching opens up new perspectives and expands your own boundaries.
Focus on the future
Coaching focuses on the client’s personal development, goal achievement and self-reflection. The coach supports the coachee in finding their own solutions, recognizing their strengths and exploiting their full potential. Coaching is therefore future-oriented.
A quote from the coach and publisher of the coaching magazine Dr. Christopher Rauen sums it up very well:
“A coach is a neutral provider of feedback. Friends often don’t tell the truth because they don’t want to hurt or are pursuing their own interests. The coach is a social corrective. Like a sparring partner, they make you fit for everyday life and challenges.”
(“The important thing is to find out who you are.”)
Do you want to develop your full potential? Would you like to strengthen your self-efficacy and self-reflection? Then coaching definitely makes sense for you!
And back to my friend’s question😉 He made a conscious decision to seek advice as a friend, but also signed up for a preliminary coaching session with one of my colleagues.
